ahead on "cnn sunday morning" which starts right now. >>> good morning, everyone. welcome to this very special edition of cnn "sunday morn." it is january 20th, i'm randi kaye. another glorious shot of the sun rising over the capitol building. >> i'm john berman live on the national mall in washington as we gear up for the 57th presidential inauguration, which is today. today is the official swearing in of president barack obama for a second term as mandated by the constitution. that will happen around 11:55 this morning. >> in a little over an hour from now, vice president joe biden will take his oath of office. we'll, of course, take you there live. all day long cnn will bring you the ceremonies, the concerts, the celebrations and, of course, break down the political and historical context of this very special day. but, first, this morning we want to bring you up to speed on this hostage situation in algeria. this morning, the crisis at a natural gas plant is aapparently over and state department says at least one american man is dead, but we still have so many questions about this,
day long, cnn will bring you the ceremonies, the concerts, the celebrations and, of course, the political and the historical context of the day. first, we want to bring you up to date now on the hostage situation that is happening in alger algeria. the crisis is all over this morning, but so many questions, including how many people are still missing. here's what we do know at this hour. it launched a second assault yesterday that ended the standoff after three days. the interior ministry almost 700 hostages have been freed, as long with foreigners at least 23 hostages are dead, including three british citizens and so are dozens of islamic militants. i'm joined by our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. first of all, are any americans missing and what is washington saying at this point? >> good morning, randi. this violent and unstable situation over, but the u.s. is still trying to determine what happened. now, according to the state department. one american man, one american citizen is dead. six other american hostages were freed and it is believed there are still a sma
on inside that theater during the shooting rampage back in july. cnn's casey wian is live. >> reporter: good morning. it's been six months since james holmes allegedly gunned down dozens of people killing 12 in a colorado movie theater. even today, the sights and sounds of that day are both chaotic and disturbing. aurora, colorado, just after midnight july 20th, 2012. >> 315 and 314, first shooting at century theaters. >> he came down with his gun in my face. he was about three feet away from me at that point. in that instant, i didn't know what to do. i was honestly terrified. >> right by the exit. just firing away. he's not aiming at a specific person, he's just aiming everywhere trying to hit as many people as he can. >> i've got a child victim. i need rescue at the back door of theater nine, now. >> just got to get out. just got to get out the door. just get my kids out of here. >> suspect is going to be a male, unknown race. black camo outside outfit believed to be wearing a vest, gas mask, and multiple long guns. >> reporter: that suspect, 25-year-old james holmes, is charged with kill
sponsorship money and may be ready to testify against others. cnn's ed lavandera is live in austin, texas. ed, what do we know about this confession? >> i think the million-dollar question is to what extent lance armstrong apologizes and what will that sound like? will he apologize or admit to using steroids throughout all of his cycling career? i mean to what level will this be done? more importantly, just how he will say it. not many details other than beyond that headline, that according to media reports lance armstrong will admit to using steroids in his interview with oprah winfrey. not much coming from oprah winfrey as well. shortly after wrapping up the interview here in austin, texas, oprah sent out a brief tweet. just wrapped with lance armstrong more than 2 1/2 hours and he came ready. she wrote "ready" in all caps. if past interviews are any indication, lance armstrong, you knowing has over the years, john, been a very tough interview, very steadfast, so it will be very interesting to see how his tone and attitude changes now if he has to be a lot more forthright and contrite. we'l

much more ahead on "cnn sunday morning" which starts right now. >>> good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. 7:00 on the east coast and 4:00 a.m. on the west. we begin this hour with breaking news out of brazil where a night club fire has killed 90 people, but that number could go higher as more details come in. the fire is eerily similar to the station nightclub fire in rhode island almost ten years ago. 100 people died in that blaze after pyrotechnics set that building on fire. most victims were trampled to death or died from the smoke. for more on the fire in brazil, i'm joined on the phone by chasta darlington who is there for us. what do we know right now? >> well, randi, you brought up important points. what we found out from officials on the scene from firefighters, is the vast majority of the people that are pulling out of the rubble did die of smoke inhalation. they aren't finding charred bodies and they aren't feep finding people who were killed by the fire itself. some people couldn't find the exit in the darkness. there was a pyrotechnics show going on, but the people we ta

confirms to cnn that the operation seems to have ended for the night, but it is not over. and i wanted to quote what this official told us here at cnn. quote, there are still hostages and there are still terrorists, so tomorrow is another day. the algerian press service reports numerous casualties in the operation. the exact number, still unknown right now. and a lot of questions already are coming from the united states about the algerian government's tactics in the operation that could have put the hostages in jeopardy. now, we also want to let you know that right now, there's a chartered flight en route of bp employees from algeria. it is headed towards london to gatwick airport. now, that could be landing at any moment. we don't yet know if the passengers are any of the freed hostages or if there are americans on board, but as we get that information, we're going to share that with you. the brother of an irish national who escaped from captivity had a harrowing story. he spoke to cnn today and described what happened to his brother. >> yeah, but just found out recently that he'd be
